Valvoline or castrol. Whichever is on sale

I've always used quaker state...just plain ol 10w30. I consistently run them up to about 250k with regular oil changes and then usually sell them and buy another. I've been through 5 that way so far, so I guess it works well enough.

With my 250k worn out 4.0 I used whatever was on sale at Autozone. I use fully synthetic Valvoline in my 4.6 stroker now though, conventional Valvoline in everything else I actually care about

I was driving over the road and was loading up at a refinery with pallets of engine oil. Ther was penzoil, casrol, quacker state, havolene, mobile, etc.
I asled what the difference was between same grade from diff. Co. And was told the bottle / package, cuz all the 10 w30 came out of same tank, same with other grades too, so I use O' rielly's ;)
Its the same with gasoline too ! Did a job up riverside way and all kinds of tankers filled up ( including qt) and all got gas from same tanks...according to octane rateing.
I may be Rad and I may be Bad :pbj: but I am never SAD ! :kilt:

I've heard that about engine oil being the same as long as it had the label on the back

The OIL is the same, its the ADDATIVE packages that are different. At least that's what I have been told.

Yep, all gasoline and oil is the same until they add the brand specific detergents and such. Who knows if any of that stuff is really worth it.

Oil is pumped from same tank into differemt brand bottles and then sealed
gas is pumped from same tanks into tankers of different company's
And then pumped into stations umderground tanks
When are these " additives " added?
I would really like to know.

At the terminal when they load it into the trucks. My father has driven gasoline tankers for 30+ yrs as an independent owner first, then for BP (back when it was Standard Oil), and now manages the fleet at Carter Energy. I asked those same questions long ago and got the low-down from him. Most of the detergents and additives aren't all that different, each brand just advertizes them as such. Same goes for oil.

...so you're tellin' me that the $1.29/ qt dollar store oil that I used to put in my uber-thirsty S-10 4-banger is (for all general purposes) identical to the $6 - $7/ qt Castrol GTX that my Jeeps gargle with?!! Please tell me I'm not that big of an idiot/ victim of commercialism! (don't sugar-coat this). Oh, yeah - and I guarantee my vehicles run better/ idle smoother/ get better milage when I DON'T use gas from QT! Is this all in my head?

                            BTW, great thread, jdlefebure.

Don't know if the good oil is better, but I use Castrol GTX 99% of the time. Occasionally I'll use some other major brand if they have a good sale going on.

I use QT almost exclusively in the 4-wheeled vehicles but usually BP 92 octane in the bike since it is air cooled and can run a little hot. I should probably burn BP 92 in the Jeep too, but they don't have as many stations as QT.

I use QT because they go through so much fuel that their is a lower likelihood of having water or dirt in the tank.
