  • doubler or 4-low ?

Was pricing a Dana 300 flip , twin stick , and 4-low and it seemed like a 2 speed atlas might be cheaper ! :)

So I am now looking into a doubler or a 4-low for me np231 .

I am aware the doubler will lengthen the t/c about 8". But I would end up with a 3 speed t/c .

A 4-low would stay same size and just lower gear ratio.

I am wanting input from anyone who has done either for pro's and con's !

Input from anyone thinking of doing either would be nice too ! ;)

I would look into various doubler kits/ set ups vs a two speed Atlas2.

Cost: I think a doubler can be done cheaper. D&D Machine used to sell a doubler kit for $500 (2008 ).

Versatility: Doubler offers more gearing options and deeper gears.

Ease of install: Atlas2 is going to be more straight forward as you can purchase everything except the drive shafts in one fell swoop. You can even order the correct speedo set up so that it all just "bolts up". Won't have to worry about pushing the rear axle back or moving/ modifying the gas tank.

Strength, less issues? Atlas2 Larger everything compared to stock. Doublers occasionally leak

Deeper gears: Doubler looking at 7:1 with two standard gear reduction sets, looking at 5:1 with the deepest Atlas2.

I have heard several people say they have broken their 4 speed Atlas's with healthy V8s, on top of that they are another grand in cost over a Atlas2 ie probably looking at $3500sh out the door by time its all said and done.

NorthWest Fab sells two underdrive units and there is also a Klune-V. The NWF and Klune run around $1,000 to $1,500. NWF also sells 203/300 doubles and a flip ring for a dana 300.
I would email NWF about flipping a 300 and a underdrive. They are very helpful.

You can also do a 231 doubler. There is a guy on pirate that sells the 231 doubler kits. The last link is for a 231 box4rocks doubler.

The flipped 300 is out for now cuz it needs a 23 spline trans output.
        Mine is 21 spline .)

I am thinking a 4-low cuz I will save dinero on drive shafts ;)
            I will flip the daña 300 when I install fullsize axles and a V-8 , auto tranny , etc. ;

Why not find ax15 trans and go ahead and build one transfer case to run at a later time. Or if you wanting gearing find an sm 420 4 speed and run it with the flipped 300. The 7:1 first gear would be like having a doubler and you would have your trans/xcase combo for your later v8 swap

You still could do a 231 doubler and keep your stock 231. You would have to change drive shafts a bit though. A 231/231 with 4to1 in the 2nd 231 would be cool.

I took me trusty 7 or maybe 5 dollar calculator and think the best bang for the BUCK is to just wheel what I got and build the stuff for future aspirations ;)

Which means I will be doing flip , but with future sb Chevy , would I even need a 4-low ?
I know I will need HD tailshaft
But would I need gears lower that stock d300 ?
I will have 5.38 gears in axles .
And with 42" tyres , wouldn't that be enough ?

What trans and tcase are you going to use? You will need 4-low. I would run a 203/300 setup or 203/205. Kinda depends on the size of the V8 and how you drive.
                      A dana 300 is only 2.62 stock.
You could even do a NWF black box with a chevy 241.

                        I did math for a 4-low
                        2.72. ..........4.0

                        43.837. .....64.452
                        25.984. .... 38.212
                        16.170. ..... 23.78
                        11.152. ....16.4
                        9.479. .... 13.94

That's a lot of money for a granny low I probably will never use !

I do most of me wheeling in 2nd or 3rd gear now whith the 2.72 low ! :)

Its all about how you drive... if you like to crawl go doubler if you like a little momentum don't.

Momentum is exactly how I wheel ! :)

I want to get up and over it and with just a wimpy 4 banger , I need all the help I can get ! ;)

But if I am going to spend the bucks , might as well concentrate them on future and not double them with existing ;)

You better "build" you a set of axles for that kind of wheeling!
