1996 Jeep Cherokee will not start...

every once in a while I noticed that the Jeep would hesitate, normally right after being started...

right now it just cranks and crank, but does not start

it has a 4.0HO

ok I am getting power to the coil and to the pump...

I unhooked the fuel line at the pump and turned it over... it does not seems to be pumping much fuel, it only shot fuel a 1 and a half feet

yeah I can hold back the fuel pressure with my pointer finger...

try it with your ring finger??? or hook it back up and use a fuel pressure tester to know for sure. Sounds like the pump is to weak...

soon as I installed to new pump it fired right up...

it feels much stronger at full throttle now... MUCH stronger

btw, I have an index, middle, ring, and pinky finger , plus thumb on each hand.........my bad ? ;-)

Did you replace the entire pump assembly, or just the pump?

If I remember correctly, isn't 1996 the last year that they had the fuel regulator on the fuel rail at the intake and a return line instead of mounting the regulator on top of the pump assembly/tank?

That would make life a lot easier if you ever have that hard start problem due to a bad fuel check valve in the assembly.
