  • Any CB experts in the area?

I want to install a CB in my TJ and was looking for ideas for the antenna. Like what type length, and where to attach it on a TJ?

Anyone know of any good local CB stores?

    Thanks, Dennis

take it from a former owner/operator....(truck driver) firestick is a bad idea........they break in cold weather and have weak mounting threads......Franklin's are the best......bend them in half and wont break... go with a length that gets over your top if its fibergalss......if you run a soft top you can go even shorter......use at least 18' of coaxial cable and your swr's will be close....i have a meter and have only had to reset one in 12 years of truckin.....also depends on your radio.......i run a galaxie 33 thats suuuped up....i also have an old cobra 25 .....both dead key about 200 watts.....and swing well over 500. a stock store bought radio will key about 2.5 - 3 watts. just use good cable and your swr's will be fine. as far as a mount.......anyplace you dont minde drillin a hole.......be sure to run a ground wire if you mount to anything that moves.......bad grounds will KILL a radio.

          CB

          Well Iam no expert,
My antenna is mounted to my rear bumper. The antenna sticks just a little above my top., Witch works ok for me. Account I have a soft top.
The Flying J is a good place to get CB stuff. I do have a SWR meter. And I do know how to use it.

Ok what do you mean swing over 500? Also what about 18' of Coaxial am i supposed to run it around my Jeep? That seems like pretty long cord. Also are you talking about grounding my antenna or just grounding the CB? Should I hook the CB up directly to the battery or is there a fuse location for it?

Sorry for so many questions but I am pretty new.
            Thanks,
            Dennis

to swing 500 means they will peak out at 500 watts while talking on them. just to hold the key down and not talk is dead key.....if you installed a meter to measure the watts you could see it swing up. the 18' of cable is to insure good transmission and reception on your radio. i should have explained it more. it insures that you dont lose any signal. and no dont run it around the jeep LOL just bunch it up somewhere outa the way....not coiled....just bunched up. the ground is for the antenna. usually through the mounting hardware.. if you are going to install on your tire rack or tailgate....make sure its grounded good.....hinges dont make good grounds. if you dont hook the radio up to a direct power source you may get engine noise from it...a direct line from the battery is best but you should have a hot source at the fuse box.....like the cigarette lighter fuse. and ground it solid to the chasis as well. the fly'n j aint a bad place to get your radio goodies....just more expensive...the petro in oak grove is worth the drive.
i also need to make a correction on the antenna thing......franklin is not always the best ....but for good flex and good service its real good.....a wilson is the best service.....just not good for flex. hope this helps.

I don't think I have that windshield support bar that he is talking about for the radio mount. I have pretty much just decided I am going to drill a hole for the antenna mount.

Now I just need to find what antenna mount I am going to use. Plus I am still concerned about where to mount the CB in the Jeep.

Ok, I got all my stuff except for my CB Radio Mount. I am going to buy the Turbo City bracket that goes above the Mirror it should be here by next week.

                    Here is what I have:

                    Uniden Pro510XL
                    Firestik II 4' antenna
Firestik hood Mount for Jeep TJ

Anything I should know about this before I start my installation? I have found a pretty good write up for pretty much the same install I will be doing so I am going on that.

If and when I get everything installed what do I need to do to fine tune it?

                    Thanks for any help!
                    Dennis
