  • XJ to ZJ alternator question....

Hey, my 99 XJ"s alternator is shot. So I went for a new one from an 97 ZJ for higher amps to run lights, stereo, ham radio, computer, inverter etc. BUT (yes. that's a big but) my XJ had a different two wire plug than the new one. My two wires are black and the second is black with red and a oval shaped plug. The new one has two seperate nuts, one for each wire. Can anyone tell me which wire goes to which? Thank you, Dean

Wish I could help. Looking at parts for each on Oreilly's website they look direct bolt swap type alternators..........until you view the image of the back of each respective alternator. :-(

Maybe a parts store could help you with the wiring - unfortunately, it isn't one of my strong points.

BTW - I'd try Google - "ZJ alternator in XJ"

        I know it's a fairly common upgrade.

Between JeepForum, CherokeeForum, NAXJA, and XJTalk.........you're bound to find what you need.
